Welcome to Mrs. Schack's First Grade!

What is a typical day like in first
grade? When all of the children come in they have the opportunity to play
with a variety of learning centers. At some point in the day we have Daily
Meeting where the children learn important concepts such as calendar, graphing,
money, counting, patterns and place value. Our reading program is a big part of
our day. The children participate in blending, phonemic awareness activities,
dictation, blending and workshop. During workshop, our reading teachers come
into the classroom and we are able to break into small groups for more
individual time. Throughout the reading block of time, the children will be
learning consonant sounds (including blends), short and long vowel sounds
(including diphthongs and digraphs), about 250 sight words, vocabulary, how to
read with expression and fluency, and several reading comprehension strategies.
Last year we started a new math program. The Saxon math program uses several
activities, games and manipulatives to teach a variety of math concepts. The
children eat lunch in the cafeteria Monday through Friday and in the classroom
on Fridays for good behavior. We go outside for recess almost everyday,
even in the winter. Please make sure your child is
dressed for the weather. If the weather is rainy or below 20 degrees, the
children get a few minutes of indoor play time. Every day the children also have
one "Special" class (Art, Music Gym, Library). Please make sure your child has
sneakers on gym days. In first grade we also work on penmanship and process
writing. Spelling starts later in the year.

Please check your child's take home folder every night to see what assignments are due. We have math homework almost every day. Support from home is important for student success.
